From what I can tell (looking at p. 3 of the directions), it appears as though we may not “need” and exterior header/ledger for the box rail as the clips (item B) look able to be moved accordingly. We could position them over studs and then hang the box rail. Studs “should” be 16” OC (on center) each side of the door frame.
That said, we will still need to fur out the box rail to be flush with the existing door casing (approximately ¾” off the T1-11 siding) - The box rail is designed to hang the door with no less than 9/32” (a little more than ¼”) reveal. So we’ll basically need to hang the door from (at least) a ¾” piece of material to ensure we clear the door casing.
